An interview with Andrea Chi Ramírez of Ortopac Mérida and Salud a Domicilio

A suitable piece of equipment is only part of a useful rental. Will it fit through the doorway, work with the planned vehicle and arrive before it is needed? Andrea Chi Ramírez, commercial representative for the Mérida branch of Ortopac Mérida and Salud a Domicilio, explains the practical details visitors should confirm.

This interview has been edited from Andrea’s supplied answers. Equipment, service areas, availability and rental terms must be confirmed directly for the requested dates and address. Equipment choice for a medical condition should be discussed with the treating professional. This is practical rental information, not a clinical recommendation or independent product assessment.

1. What equipment do the two services offer?

We operate two complementary services. Ortopac Mérida focuses on mobility and orthopedic support. We rent wheelchairs and offer mobility and support products, including walkers.

Salud a Domicilio focuses on equipment for home care and temporary needs. Our range includes manual and electric hospital beds, oxygen concentrators, patient lifts, vascular compression equipment and other medical devices. The appropriate equipment and its use need to be confirmed for the individual need.

We primarily serve Mérida and its metropolitan area. For addresses outside our usual area, check availability and delivery terms in advance.

2. What should someone check before reserving a wheelchair?

Consider the user’s height and weight, seat width, mobility needs and whether another person will be assisting. The user’s or caregiver’s ability to operate the equipment safely also matters, particularly with larger equipment such as a patient lift.

Check doorway widths, lifts, bathrooms, steps, ramps and the actual accommodation. For the M4 Pro wheelchair, we verify the proposed fit before confirming a rental. Visitors should also check vehicle transport, access dimensions and terrain. Not every wheelchair suits uneven surfaces, sand or extended outdoor travel.

When a medical condition is involved, discuss the equipment choice with the treating healthcare professional.

3. How does a visitor reserve equipment, and what should the quote include?

Contact us to confirm the equipment, rental dates and delivery location. Advance booking is useful during busy travel periods. Availability should be checked for the actual dates rather than assumed.

A written quotation should identify the equipment, rental period, price, delivery and collection arrangements, any deposit, requirements, extension terms and cancellation conditions. We explain the applicable terms before confirmation.

Prices vary by equipment, duration and delivery location, so we quote each request individually.

4. Can you deliver to a hotel or vacation rental?

We can coordinate delivery to hotels, apartments and vacation rentals in Mérida and surrounding areas, subject to availability and access. More distant locations may involve an additional transport charge.

Confirm that the accommodation can receive the equipment and establish who can accept it if the user has not arrived. Agree on the delivery point, timing, responsible recipient, basic use instructions where appropriate and later collection. Ask us to confirm the service area and cost for the exact address.

5. What happens if there is a problem during the rental?

Equipment is inspected, cleaned and prepared before delivery. We ask customers to perform basic cleaning before return. Extraordinary cleaning may attract an additional charge, so the applicable return requirements should be understood in advance.

If equipment malfunctions, is damaged or does not meet the intended need, contact us so we can assess the available solution. Support depends on equipment, location and time of day. Confirm the contact route and support arrangements before renting rather than assuming an immediate replacement or round-the-clock service.

An equipment issue is different from a medical emergency. In an urgent medical situation, contact the appropriate emergency services directly.

6. What is a common planning mistake?

Focusing on the equipment while overlooking its surroundings. A wheelchair may fit the user but be difficult to use with narrow doors, steps, an inaccessible bathroom or a vehicle without enough space.

Plan three things together: the person’s needs, the equipment’s characteristics and the accessibility of the accommodation and places they intend to visit.

Useful next step

Before confirming a rental, write down equipment dimensions, the delivery address and contact, room-access checks, transport arrangements, collection time and the agreed route for problems. Keep clinical information private and share it only with the appropriate care team.
