A conversation with Omar Alexis Nicolas, representative of Walk In Labs.
A short stay does not mean every laboratory result will be ready before departure. Omar Alexis Nicolas explains how visitors can ask Walk In Labs about test preparation, estimates and reporting times before visiting its active locations in Playa del Carmen and Bacalar.

Interview by Ken Gardner. Answers translated from Spanish and edited for clarity. These answers describe the laboratory’s reported practices, not requirements at every Mexican laboratory. Confirm current services, addresses, hours and instructions directly. Your treating clinician should decide which tests you need and review the results in the context of your care. The contributor has confirmed that the former Tulum branch is closed.
1. Which locations are currently active, and is an appointment needed?
We have locations in Playa del Carmen and Bacalar, both in the city centre. Visitors can come without an appointment during our usual hours, Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Before visiting, ask us to confirm the exact address, hours and availability of the requested study. We answer questions through WhatsApp at +52 984 235 9591.
2. What is needed to request an estimate?
You can send a medical order or, if you do not have one, a list of the tests you want quoted. We send the total cost for the requested tests and aim to make the charges clear before the visit.
For a diagnosis or ongoing treatment, agree the testing plan with your treating clinician. Ask the laboratory to specify which tests the estimate covers and whether any further service would need a separate quote.
3. How should someone check preparation instructions?
Contact our WhatsApp number before coming. Each test has its own requirements, so it is important to clarify the instructions for your particular tests rather than assume the same preparation applies to every visit.
Ask about fasting, sample collection and any medication questions. Decisions about stopping or changing prescribed medication should be discussed with your treating clinician; do not make changes yourself based on a general travel guide.
4. What should a visitor with only a few days in the city consider?
Basic tests can have results the same day. Depending on the study and method, others may take up to 48 hours, while some special tests can take weeks.
Confirm the expected reporting time for each requested test before visiting. That helps avoid planning around an unrealistic delivery date. Ask whether the test needs to be arranged differently at the two locations and what happens if another sample is required.
5. How are results provided, including when the patient has left the city?
We can send results by email or WhatsApp according to the patient’s preference. Results can also be shared through a secure link for online viewing, so the patient can access them after leaving the city.
Our reports are in Spanish. We can refer you to a bilingual medical team for a more detailed evaluation and interpretation if it is needed.
Before testing, confirm whether your receiving clinician can use the report’s language and format, how it will reach them securely and who will explain the results and next steps. Access to a report is not the same as a completed clinical review.
6. What planning mistake would you most like visitors to avoid?
Contact us beforehand and request the information you need so the visit can be easier to organize. Our facilities offer general clinical laboratory services and electrocardiograms. We do not offer imaging such as CT scans or MRI.
Confirm the service you need before travelling to the laboratory. If imaging or another service is required, arrange the appropriate centre separately with your treating clinician.
Before your visit
- Confirm the active location and its exact address.
- Identify the tests requested and obtain a written estimate.
- Ask for preparation instructions specific to those tests.
- Confirm reporting times individually, especially for special tests.
- Agree how your clinician will receive and review the results.
- Check separately whether another facility is needed for imaging or further care.
