Residency & Visas

Do I need a visa to live in Mexico?

Citizens of the US, Canada, and most European countries can enter Mexico without a visa for up to 180 days as a tourist. To live long-term, you need Temporary or Permanent Residency, which you apply for at a Mexican consulate before arriving.

How long does the residency process take?

The full process typically takes 4–8 weeks from consulate application to receiving your residency card in Mexico. Processing times vary by consulate and immigration office.

Can I work in Mexico on a residency visa?

Temporary Residency without work authorization does not allow you to work for a Mexican employer. However, remote work for foreign employers is generally permitted. Permanent Residents can work freely in Mexico.

Is healthcare good in Mexico?

Private healthcare in Mexico is excellent, especially in major cities and expat hubs. Many doctors trained in the US or Europe. Costs are a fraction of US prices.

Can I use IMSS as an expat?

Yes. Legal residents can enroll in IMSS (Mexico’s public health insurance) for approximately $300–$500 USD/year, which provides comprehensive coverage including hospitalisation and prescriptions.
